Cold Heading
Cold heading is a high‑efficiency metal forming process used to produce fasteners and other small precision parts by plastically deforming wire or rod at room temperature. Instead of cutting material away, the process forces metal to flow within a die cavity, creating the desired shape with minimal waste. It is widely used for bolts, screws, rivets, pins and special components that require high strength, accurate dimensions and repeatable quality. The process usually begins with high‑quality steel, stainless steel, copper, brass or aluminum wire supplied in coils. The wire is straightened, cut to length, and fed into a multi‑station cold heading machine. Each station performs a specific forming step, such as upsetting, extruding, backward extruding or trimming. By combining several stages, complex geometries can be obtained from a simple cylindrical blank in a single production cycle.Cold heading relies on the plasticity of metals at ambient temperature. When the material is subjected to high pressure in a confined die cavity, it flows without cracking, filling the shape precisely. Because the material is not heated, dimensional stability is excellent and there is no scale on the surface. In addition, work hardening during deformation increases the strength and fatigue resistance of the final part, often eliminating the need for subsequent heat treatment. One of the major advantages of cold heading is its efficiency for large‑volume production. Cycle times per part are very short, and multi‑blow machines can produce several features in one pass. Material utilization is extremely high because the process reforms the metal instead of removing it, reducing raw material costs and scrap handling. The smooth, formed surfaces also minimize or even remove the need for secondary machining.Tooling design is critical to successful cold heading. Dies and punches must be made from high‑strength tool steels or carbide to withstand repeated impact loads and high contact pressures. Proper selection of die geometry, fillet radii and lubrication ensures good metal flow and long tool life. In many cases, finite element simulation is used to optimize the forming sequence and prevent defects such as cracking, folding or internal voids.Cold heading is particularly suitable for parts with symmetric shapes and relatively short lengths, such as hex head bolts, socket screws, flange bolts and special fasteners with knurls or grooves. Threads are typically produced afterward by rolling, which preserves fiber flow and further enhances mechanical properties. The combination of cold heading and thread rolling forms the basis of modern high‑strength fastener production. With ongoing improvements in equipment, materials and simulation technology, cold heading continues to expand into more demanding applications. It offers a cost‑effective, sustainable and high‑precision solution for mass‑produced metal components where reliability and consistency are essential.
